Congratulations to Kushal Shah (son of Pravin and Pravina Shah of Austin, Texas) and Alvi Shah (daughter of Chandulal and Kantaben Shah of Mumbai, India) on their wedding on March 3rd, 2008. We wish the couple all the best and happiness in their married life.

The annual Father’s Day picnic in the New York Metro area was held on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Haverstraw Bay Park, in Haverstraw, New York.  Over 50 people attended and enjoyed catching up, with the Hudson River as a backdrop.  There was plenty of food, including jalebi-gathiya, bagels, chai, sweet corn, veggie-kebabs, bhel, and sandwiches.

Devendra Virchand Raichand Shah died suddenly on the morning of 9th June 2008 in London following a heart attack. He was born in Nairobi on 1st July 1945 where his parents (late) Virchand Raichand Ranmal Shah of Dabsang and Amritben (Arablus) ran a corner shop. Devendra did his pre-university education in Kenya and he also became a Queen Scout and received the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award for his outdoor activities on Kenya’s Independence day. He studied for an Hons Degree in Electrical Engineering from 1965 to 1969 at Edinburgh University, Scotland.

Congratulations to Sonia Shah (Daughter of Madhu and Hemendra Shah of Leominster, Massachusetts) and Adam Boardman (Son of Carol and Larry Boardman of Connecticut) on their wedding on Jun 14th 2008 at the Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston, MA. 13th April 2008 is an everlasting memory for the 12 Oshwals (6 men and 6 ladies) who ran the Flora London Marathon in the Superman costume - red t-shirt and blue cape. Celebrating the commemoration of 100 years of 26.2 miles distance running, this biggest ever group of Oshwals training together and running the London Marathon did the Oshwal community really proud! Bijal Jhankhariya daughter of Shantilal and Pushpa Jhankhariya of Hackettstown, NJ, who has graduated from William Paterson University, New Jersey, majoring in Accounting.

Deepa Galaiya daughter of Jayanti and Vijya Galaiya of Long Valley, NJ on her double graduation from Brown University in Bio Physics and International relations. Deepa is graduating with several honors and awards. She will go on to Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA for further studies.

Chiraag Galaiya, son of Jayanti and Vijya Galaiya of Long Valley, NJ. Chiraag is accepted for the prestigious Governor School summer program at Drew University for Math and Science. Chiraag scored perfect in his PSAT and SAT math.

Prina Shah, daughter of Chandrakant and Niru Shah, currently residing in Schaumburg, Illinois, graduated with double degrees: PharmD (Doctorate of Pharmacy), and MBA (Master of Business Administration) from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, on May 18th, 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

Renu Shah daughter of Meena and Chandu Shah graduated from Rutgers University New Jersey majoring in Biology and minoring in Psychology.

Congratulations to Milan Dipak Shah (son of Smita & Dipak Shah) of Lemont, Illnois, on his graduation from Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Milan has been very active in various activities at Lewis University. He was a president of South Asian Student’s council, where his leadership encouraged a variety of activities in fashion shows, music and dance programs involving all different cultures. Milan always participated in making a difference in the lives of other students as well as providing new ideas to the Board of Directors to achieve a close knit community between students and management. Milan is seeking a position in business administration & management, currently assisting the family business. Congrats!!!!! keep up the good work.

Congratulations to Mehul Malde, son of Amubhai and Vijiyaben Malde of Santacruz (W) Mumbai, India. Mehul is graduating from Babson College of Boston, MA. He earned his Masters Degree in Business.

Teaching children to appreciate differences in cultures is a key to overcoming racial intolerance, and a recent event held at Meadowbrook School Hillsdale, NJ, went pretty far toward that end.

Meadowbrook took the idea of standard lessons on cultures and ran with it. The school held its first Multi-Cultural Festival on Feb 1st 2007 and the second on April 1st 2008, in which kids could hop to Germany, skip to India and jump to Japan in the course of a day.

Texas-Oklahoma Oshwal samaj organized a spring picnic on May 4th, 2008.

We had a good turn out of about 60 people. We were very glad to have Oshwal USA president, Mr Keshavbhai Shah, join us for the picnic. Satishbhai-Suryaben Shah were the grand sponsors for dinner which was very delicious- Ragda Pattis and Pizza. Other families participated in the potluck for appetizers and desserts. Our new Oshwal guests came from Austin, Texas, this year. The weather was beautiful and our adults and kids were busy with kite-flying, volley ball, dodge ball, biking and walking.
